Rewards and Motivation: They Don’t Just Work on Dogs

We’re about eight months into our five-year get-completely-out-of-debt plan. Only two things sustain me:

  1. The thought that at the end of all this, I’ll be able to pursue my dreams (even though I’m not exactly sure what those are yet)
  2. Another trip to Buffalo Wild Wings

You see, every time a debt gets paid off, we reward ourselves with a trip to Buffalo Wild Wings. I love Buffalo Wild Wings, so I can hardly wait to get our last $1,800 of car debt paid off next month. Yum!

I think that rewarding yourself for making progress is a step that many financial advisors and gurus overlook. It’s relevant for debt reduction, saving and really any behavior that you want to change.

What are your rewards for meeting your goals? Do they increase as the goals get bigger? Is it a challenge not to feel guilty about rewarding yourself after trying so hard to be stingy?
